PERSONAL STORIES

Churro Story
In 2012, I started my churro "business" to help ease the financial burden from my mom, and so I started to sell churros that I would buy at a cheaper price from a local store. This churro selling “business” started this past June. On every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday I went to the beach, parks, and bars to sell churros for a dollar apiece. At times, it was quite fun, especially during the summers as I sold churros at the beach while my brother and sister enjoyed the sun. Often, carrying a hundred churros in one hand and handing out the churros and collecting money with the other hand proved to be draining. Even though I normally made around seventy dollars a day, it was not an easy job.
If I could not sell all at the beach, I often went to the nearest bar from my home. I was underage but they allowed me to sell churros there! While selling churros at the bar, sometimes I got to see and experience sad things. I not only saw some people wasting their lives, but the male customers at times tried to flirt with me. Since I am a Christian, I thought about sharing the gospel with them, but I made sure to just sell the churros and get out by eleven’o clock.
In 2014, I started my education at Biola University. Since school has started I have not been able to work during school nights. I know my mom still needs help so I’ve decided to continue to work but only at parks on the weekends. Working at parks has its advantages; they are near my home, friends help me to sell, and my brother and sister play basketball while I work.
My job helps my family financially but it also has taught me much. Whenever I encounter a customer, I remind myself that I am rich, and that my riches are my family. Selling churros is not embarrassing but a practice of humility for me. Even now, I continue to help my mom, so don’t be surprised if I ask you someday, “Good evening, I’m selling churros for a dollar. Would you like to buy one? They are nice and warm…Don’t worry, I didn’t make them!”

ByGrace Experience
In 2014, I partnered up with an international non-profit called "ByGrace Trust". The heart of the non-profit is to provide education and boarding to orphans in Kenya, Africa. Their goal is to create educated leaders for the purpose of increasing university and job opportunities. My role was to host campaigns and concerts in different churches to gain finical support for the orphanage necesities. In the orphanages I was incharge of all biblical devotions and teachings. I preached about 5 times a week in the locations of Soweto, Komarock Phase 4, and southern Nairobi. We hosted leadership training and Vacation Bible with the upper class Kenyans students and lower class students.
